ASFA Strategic Plan 2023-2026: Growing Stronger Through Collaboration

Our society’s mission is to advance apheresis medicine for patients, donors and practitioners through education, evidence-based practice, research and advocacy. In recent years, ASFA recognized the need to address and install a fifth pillar, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). While upholding these pillars, our vision is to be a global leader in apheresis medicine. To this end, we developed and updated strategic priorities targeting each of our five pillars from now until 2026.

1. Increase research infrastructure and activity

ASFA recognizes the need to have its own registry. We will determine funding, governance and structure in the coming years. Similarly, we will offer educational content to educate professionals in conducting research.

2. Promote professional education and recognition of apheresis providers

ASFA already provides professional education in the form of our annual meeting, webinar program, the Journal for Clinical Apheresis, the Principles of Apheresis Technology textbook, etc. We look to increase our promotional efforts to educate and build awareness to the field of apheresis.

Current apheresis providers are eligible for Qualification in Apheresis (QIA), a qualification managed by ASCP. ASFA intends to further develop the program and consider converting it into a certification.

3. Position ASFA as the expert resource on apheresis to policy makers

The Special Issue, Clinical Applications of Therapeutic Apheresis: An Evidence Based Approach. 9th Edition was released in April 2023. This is a resource widely used within the apheresis community. ASFA has initiated and will continue to inform insurance companies, FDA, CMS and other relevant parties of its release to make appropriate and relevant changes to their own policies. Likewise, we look to identify and establish relevant patient advocacy groups for the benefit of both groups.

4. Increase international engagement and collaboration

We look to expand our engagement with international organizations and members. Where possible, we will seek recognition of the guidelines internationally and engage in shared educational activities. We will also explore having educational activities in languages other than English at future meetings, webinars, and print ed materials.

5. Promote a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion in apheresis

Pertaining to our newest pillar, we look to provide DEI educational opportunities, and partner with relevant organizations regarding DEI initiatives. We want to establish as a prime example of DEI in hopes to positively impact the apheresis community.

Click here to view our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan.

Success in Physician RVU Re-evaluations Related to Six Therapeutic Apheresis Codes

Representatives from ASFA's Public Affairs and Advocacy Committee recently worked with colleagues from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Renal Physicians Association (RPA) and the American Society for Hematology (ASH) to examine, evaluate and defend proposed increases to the existing Physician Work Relative Value Units (RVUs) schedule and the direct practice expense inputs related to six therapeutic apheresis codes. In the 2016 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) Proposed Rule, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) identified the apheresis codes as potentially misvalued. This led to a collaborative effort by members from the CAP, RPA, ASH and ASFA to perform a complicated and comprehensive financial analysis, with help from ASFA membership via a membership survey last year, to derive data for an accurate representation of inputs to perform various therapeutic apheresis procedures to be used in defending positions advocated by the societies and pertinent to proposed changes to the various procedures.

We are pleased to inform you that the CMS has accepted the recommended increases to the physician work RVUs for the six therapeutic apheresis codes (36511, 36512, 36513, 36514, 36516, and 36522) for the 2018 calendar year. Hence, the work of physicians related to therapeutic apheresis will be more fairly valued moving forward.

ASFA leadership thanks all members and colleagues from the professional societies who participated in these efforts and looks forward to future intersocietal collaborations enhancing the care and safety of apheresis medicine interventions for the patients we serve.

The ASCP BOC offers qualifications for specific skills in several technical areas of laboratory medicine and is pleased to add the Apheresis Practitioner Qualification to its portfolio of qualifications. Upon meeting specific educational and experience requirements, candidates will be eligible to complete an online examination and if successful gain recognition for their competency as an apheresis practitioner. The APQ will be appropriate for a broad range of apheresis professionals, including but not limited to, RN, MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), BB(ASCP), SBB(ASCP), individuals with a baccalaureate degree and/or doctor in medicine. Topics within the APQ will include apheresis quality assurance, vascular access, cellular therapy collection, donor procedures, therapeutic procedures, instrumentation, calculation of blood volume and procedural mathematics, transfusion of blood products, pharmacology and anticoagulation, and evidence based best practice of apheresis medicine. The APQ will standardize training and competency in the apheresis profession.

The Apheresis Practitioner Qualification Workgroup has recently been confirmed and will be working on development of the new APQ examination questions. ASFA expects that the APQ will be offered for the first time in late 2015.
