Thank you for recommending increased awareness of possible peripheral venous access. In performing apheresis for over 30 years, I've seen a definite shift to relying on central venous access, even in stable patients with viable veins. Often a procedure is delayed while awaiting line placement, when in actuality the patient has adequate veins-at least for the first (usually urgent) procedure. Increased use of peripheral veins should be encouraged. Likely this push needs to come from leadership. By supporting robust phlebotomy education and making resources such as practice arms and vendor training available, leadership can help make less dependency on central venous access a reality. Thank you for identifying this seemingly small but very impactful decision point, and making apheresis as safe as possible.
