Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm ET
Speaker: Alexandra Jimenez, MD

Dr. Alexandra Jimenez is an Assistant Medical Director at New York Blood Center. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Johns Hopkins University and completed her medical degree from UCC School of Medicine. After receiving her medical degree, Alexandra completed her residency in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico and completed her Transfusion Medicine fellowship training at the New York Blood Center & Columbia University Medical Center. Her major research interests include the epidemiology, pathogenesis and laboratory evaluation of transfusion associated viral infections, as well as blood safety implications of new and emerging transfusion transmissible infectious diseases. Alexandra has recently published a review article pertaining to Zika and the blood supply as well as an article describing her experience with blood donors and recipients following a positive Zika screening result.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review history of ZIKV
  • Discuss modes of transmission
  • Describe clinical presentation and complications
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Zika implications for blood safety
  • Extrapolation of risk from other arboviruses
